Academic Advisor Scheme for postgraduate students

All postgraduate taught students joining Alliance Manchester Business School are allocated an Academic Advisor. The role of the Academic Advisor is:

  • To assist students with the process of induction and orientation into academic life and the University community;
  • To assist students with their personal and general academic and professional development throughout the duration of their studies, providing information and guidance on academic choice;
  • To listen and offer students help and advice about pastoral and non-academic matters and signpost students to other student services for further assistance if necessary.

At postgraduate level, you will meet your Academic Advisor during Welcome Week or during the first two weeks of teaching as appropriate. You should expect to hear from your Academic Advisor at least three times per semester via email. They will email you to check on your progress and your wellbeing as well as signposting you to support services. They will also highlight opportunities for your academic and professional development. In addition to support from the Postgraduate Careers Service, your Academic Advisor can also help you to think about your future and discuss your career goals. You can get in touch with your Academic Advisor at any time via email or by dropping in during their office hours.

As a student, you are expected to:

  • Attend and prepare for all arranged meetings with your Advisor and respond promptly to any communication from them. If at the time you receive the email from your Advisor you have nothing to report, you are still expected to reply to their email and confirm your studies are going well;
  • Make appropriate use of all the support and guidance offered at the University;
  • Take the initiative in raising problems or difficulties (academic or personal) at the earliest possible opportunity;
  • Keep records of meetings and agreed actions.

6 ways to wellbeing

When it comes to your wellbeing, a small action can make a big difference. The University of Manchester’s six ways to wellbeing will help you make positive changes to keep feeling good and living well.

The six ways to wellbeing are connect, give, take notice, be active, be healthy, as well as learn and discover.

The great thing about the six ways is that you don’t have to do all of them – and some activities, such as going on a walk with friends, allow you to do more than one at once. It’s important to find a blend of things that fits with your lifestyle yet stays fresh and varied, keeping you inspired.

More details about each of the 6 Ways to Wellbeing and actions that you can take can be found on the Student Support website.
