Coursework extensions

For the 2025/2026 academic year, in line with the new University’s Coursework Extension Policy, students can apply for an extension for any written piece of coursework prior to the deadline where they are being impacted by unforeseen short-term, one-off issues. Supporting documentation is not needed.

You can submit your coursework extension request by using the AMBS Coursework Extension request form.

The Mitigating Circumstances Team will consider all applications and if accepted the length of an extension will typically be granted for 7 calendar days, up to a maximum of 14 days, and will be based on the impact of your circumstances cited in your application.

Students can choose to provide supporting documents relating to their circumstances as this can help the School in determining the correct adjustments and support, however these are not required in order for your application to be considered. If you do wish to submit supporting documentation, please email ambs.mitcircs@manchester.ac.uk.

The Mitigating Circumstances Team reserves the right to request a student to apply for Mitigating Circumstances instead of an extension, if they deem the issues being cited as long term or falling under the Mitigating Circumstances Policy.

The deadline to apply for an extension is 24 hours before the submission deadline. Students can still apply within 24 hours of the submission deadline, however the Mitigating Circumstances Team cannot guarantee a response for applications before the deadline.

Applications for coursework extensions submitted after the deadline has passed will be considered late and penalties will apply for late submission of work if applicable.

Note: a coursework extension will not be given for time management issues as these are foreseeable events that can happen to anyone and should be planned for.

Please note that coursework extensions cannot be granted for any examinations, group work, mid-terms tests or time related seminar assessments.

You should not assume that an extension has been approved until you receive written (e.g. email) confirmation from the Mitigating Circumstances Team. Students are advised to continue to work towards the original deadline where possible, unless circumstances prevent you to do this.

DASS students: If you receive an automatic extension through DASS, you can still apply for a further extension as per the Coursework Extension Policy.

If your circumstances will result in an absence from class, please complete an absence request from the Student Engagement and Attendance System (SEAtS). Find out more about how to request an absence on the SEAtS guideline webpage.

Important note: Once the original submission deadline has passed (deadline set by the Course Unit Director) should you require another extension for the same unit, you will be required to apply for Mitigating Circumstances where supporting documents will be required.
